...I actually know who Neil deGrasse Tyson is. He spoke here at RPI last year for the Commencement Colloquy, and I remember thinking he was interesting. I could link you to the 2 1/2 hr video (I'm pretty sure I found the right one, although I haven't scanned it to find if this is the one with the piece I remember specifically watching) that we made of it.
I don't remember the details (brain like a SIEVE). I just remember I really enjoyed him, and he was very practical and blunt and I liked how honest he felt. Some others watching had expressions like they weren't nearly as amused by his honesty.

Admiring scientists these days is like admiring classical musicians. No average person knows who the current big/important/awesome ones are, but they know some of the old/dead ones. If you don't say Einstein or Bach, you get odd looks.
