We're finally down to the last game of the season. Hallelujah. This has been a mostly negative experience for my husband - coaching - and for me listening to the parents-cum-armchair coaches/critics bitching on the sidelines. It's been a good experience for our daughter, however, and ultimately that's what counts.
This is an intramural team of 5th and 6th grade girls. It's *supposed* to be about learning sportsmanship and skills. You'd think these girls were trying out for the Pros the way their parents carry on.
Anyway, the team is undefeated - and beat the other undefeated team yesterday, which threw the crazy parents into a frenzy... a happy frenzy but way, WAY over the top. And there were incidents. Very ugly incidents... two 10/11 year old girls thrown out of the game for fighting, one of the Moms from our team walked out onto the court in the MIDDLE OF THE GAME and trash talked the assistant coach on the other team because of the altercation between the girls - one was her daughter. I thought she was going to hit someone. My daughter got punched in the face while going up for a rebound. It was probably an accident, but the girl who was guarding her was one of the two who was thrown out for being overly aggressive.
I didn't do the scorebook because I arrived too late, and opted to sit with the Dads instead of the Moms, for reasons I've mentioned ad nauseum before. The Dads are nicer, they don't bitch, they just... coach from the sidelines. And they have different coaching strategies then my husband and Deb, his assistant coach. So what I want to know is, why the FUCK these guys don't sign up to coach at the beginning of the season if they want to be the coach?
Well, then after it was all done, apparently a group of parents from our team surrounded the assistant coach from the other team and exchanged words. She was still pretty upset about that later when she ran into Bob in the Stop & Shop.
Gawd. It reminds me so much of Little League, when my son played baseball. I hated Little League. I thought the Little League parents were bad, but these parents are like out of control.
Bleagh. Next week is the last game. I can't wait for it to be over. I know my husband is happy it's almost over, and it's sad that Lucy doesn't want to play again next year because her Dad doesn't want to coach, even though she is happy her team played well together and had a winning season. That sucks the most. It should be a good sport for her. But honestly? I don't blame her.
