A friendly reminder from your neighborhood crazy

After a very appropriate epically liberal Earth Day homily (albeit very inappropriate Catholic church homily) said by the ever puzzling, out of his mind, Irish Father Peter Dennis, I decided I'm tired of cutting down trees every time I go to Trader Joe's and walk out, and tired of filling land holes every time I walk out of Albertson's. Sure, I ( Read more... )

that's great to hear kel! my family and i have always been using canvas bags at the grocery stores, etc. when i really have to of course i choose paper over plastic, because there are many evils that go with plastic that i personal feel weighs heavier than paper, besides most of the grocery stores i shop at have recycled paper bags now. when i was in holland everyone brought in their own bags or cardboard boxes or baskets when grocery shopping. it was normal to them. if you did not bring any of your own things, they charge you extra to use THEIR bags. a lot of people actually do carry their own bags, maybe i am just seeing it more here in san francisco now, but i remember even at home i would see people bringing their own baskets to the market. of course i would like for MORE people to participate as well. i know it isn't much, but i feel that people should start somewhere and starting with your grocery shopping bags is a good place to start. :)

It's funny that you say that about Holland, because he was discussing the same thing back in "the old country" or Ireland. He says about 99% of people bring their own bags now. (I bet the other 1% are tourists!) It's good to hear you and your family do that. I need to get my mom to start doing it. It would particularly beneficial for her because she buys sooooooooooo many groceries, but I think for the same reason, it would initially be "difficult" in her mind to justify purchasing like fifteen of these bags. But I actually think if I explain it to her, it just might change her mind!

:D indeed.
i bring my own canvas bags to trader joe's/safeway to avoid piling up more bags in my apt.

i think the reason more people don't do this is because it forces them to think ahead/remember to actually bring the bags with them when they shop; people like to respond quickly to questions ["paper or plastic?"] and generally just want to get the hell out of grocery stores. despite the fact that it could take all of 30 extra seconds to remember to bring a couple of reusable bags to the grocery store, many people would rather just not HAVE to think about it.
i'm happy that you've jumped on the train, kel. :]

ikea charges per bag now. i bought one of their blue bags a long time ago, because they used to give you 25 cents off every purchase when you used it. and albertsons used to give you 5 cents off for every bag of theirs you brought back, i think this was before they started using mostly plastic, we used to keep a stack of them in the cabinet for when we went shopping. i really need to get some canvas bags or something, i'm racking up way too many plastic ones, i keep them so i can reuse them because i hate throwing them out. i used to use them for all my garbage at my other apartment because we were required to bag and tie our garbage.
