I think I somehow leave myself open for these things.
Scenario #1:
I am working with a group of kids on words containing the sound -ay. The lesson that I was using had the kids spell the word 'player' (as in "I am a good soccer player," not as in "Don't date him, he's a total player"). I innocently ask the kids to look at the list of words and spell other words that rhyme.
Instantly someone shouts out "Slayer!!!"
I told them it wasn't a word. Yeah, yeah, so sue me.
Scenario #2:
We are working on place value. Some kids are just not getting that "one hundred seventy-two" is not written 10072. So I am meeting with these confused few to practice writing three digit numbers. They use small white boards to write dictated numbers. I ask the kid sitting next to me to think of a number we can write.
"Six hundred sixty-six!" he declares. And as I am cringing, all the kids write "666" in huge red numbers on their boards and hold them up for me to see.
This is when the committee showing around a potential Head of School candidate walks into my class.
Somehow, they didn't notice. I think. I hope.
