Is there such a thing as elevator rage?

Hypothetical situation: I'm in a hurry to reach a meeting on the top floor. I stroll through the empty lobby and hit the 'Up' button, and an elevator opens up immediately. Just before the doors close, a man walks up, jams an arm into the door, shoulders his way into the car, and presses '2'. After leaving floor 2 with my finger firmly-held to ( Read more... )

The answer to your two questions is simple.

When you see a fireman jump into an elevator, punch him in the face and steal his key. It's rude, but it gets the job done.

Just watch out for 30 year old women disguised as 17 year old boys.

1) No more of a breach than taking the elevator one floor. (There are exceptions to this. I assume people in wheelchairs or carrying heavy stuff are exempt from this rule.)

2) Sneak in at night and rewire the panel. Bonus points if you can make it not accept button presses for any floor adjacent to the one you're currently on...

A friend of mine lived in a 16-floor dormitory during college. Over the summer break, the dorms mostly emptied out and they moved all the students to the top floor so they could remodel the middle floors. The 2nd floor was let out to teenagers coming to the school for summer youth programs.

The teenagers were told not to use the elevator, to use the stairs exclusively. Of course, they used the elevator exclusively, often stranding people on the 16th floor for minutes at a time.

After about 2 days of this, my friend took the button panel apart and swapped the wiring for "2" and "16". He informed his floormates (so they wouldn't accidentally go to floor 2), and then they all made a point of studying and relaxing in the common area by the elevator for the next few days. Every time the elevator opened to reveal a bunch of bewildered highschoolers, the students would yell at them then make them take the stairs down to the 2nd floor.

It is significant to note that this friend is the person who inspired "Kevyn" in Schlock Mercenary.
