I definitely feel as if I perform or edit who I am in front of people who aren't close to me. Especially people from work.

I used to be upset that real life didn't allow for the same sort of editing and time for composition that internet interaction does, but now I think it makes me very happy. When staring at these words on the screen we are perhaps more honest by virtue of the fact that every change we make betrays something about us, that we are perhaps more ourselves when we are free to say exactly what we mean instead of just flying be the seat of our collective pants.

But yeah, performance is always going to be a part of our daily lives as we struggle to make other people like us. I used to burp and fart and not shave and dress like a homeless person because I insisted that it was the "real" me, but that's not how you win friends and influence people (obviously). Better to let people in on your act slowly, break the truth in soft waves.

I've been working on this thing for a while now - I don't really know what to call it, a story or an essay because it isn't really either - and every time I get going good on it something gets in the way. I wish I was a baller and could retreat to Corsica every time I needed to work on anything.
