On the one hand - heh.

On the other, so irksome, this kind of BS. Besides, David Brin totally already wrote that book.

I'd meant to respond to this a while back -

In Earth (which Rob may have our old copy of, because I don't think it's on my shelves), one of the protagonist-types is a scientist responsible for the creation of a micro black hole for the purposes of energy generation. The thing slips its moorings and falls into the center of the earth. In combination with high-energy sounding devices and a second micro black hole that had long been present but undetected inside the earth (from the Tunguska event, IIRC), this results in high energy emissions (gaser/gravity laser) effects that are first discovered by the destruction of an orbital test platform where gravity/energy generation research is also taking place. This is one of many weird plotlines in that book, but... hence my comment. I really like Brin (as an author and thinker), and he's written some really neat stuff. This was his attempt, 10ish years ago, to predict an interesting near-future sci fi scenario. I think it's set 30-40 years in our future (50 at the time he wrote it).

oh yes, we have that book. i have totally read it. in fact, i will probably pull it out of a box tonight, as i've recently started unpacking our fiction.

(do you want the book back? i could mail it to you. or you could come get it. when are you two coming to visit?!?)

the scary thing is, they're totally predicting that this might happen IN REAL LIFE, just like in the book! clearly brin was prophetic, just a bit off on his timeline. ;-)
