Okay, the meeting I mentioned in my last post turned out to be both bad and good, but mostly good. It started out badly - basically I had pointed out a departmental issue to the wrong person at the wrong time, and it had made its way up the chain and upset some people. Luckily my manager thinks I have potential, so she put out the fire and kept ( Read more... )

Alright Mr. Picky, I should have put quotes around or italicized the two words to which I was referring, just to keep you happy.

And yeah, I always knew I was gonna end up being one of those blasted pioneers that gets a bum rap for being the first one to suggest common sense. =-p

It sounds like you are catching on quick. It's a blessing that you learned this before you got into your degree field. I was not so fortunate.
Yes, I've been there many times. Thanks to my need to uphold certain standards of professional practice, I have had the luxury of seeking better opportunities, more free time and a whoooole lot less money. I've been in the I/O Psych and HR field for a while and I can tell you that you have to be very careful what you say and to whom. Also realize that there are certain employers to which you do not want to suggest common sense--especially government. On the bright side, if you find yourself in a good company and can work your way into a position where you can have some power, it makes it all worthwhile. Once you get there, I know you will do well for yourself.

Ah, whew. Glad to hear things ultimately worked out well for ya, and that a bad thing was turned into a good thing!

"Suggestive selling?" I'm not familiar with that particular brand of evil...

Oh you're familiar with it, you just don't recognize it. Ever remember a time when you've called customer service for your cell phone, credit card, cable company, etc, and they've used the "HEY, you know what, while we've got you on the phone, it sure looks like *insert Product X* would be PERFECT for you, wanna sign up??" Or the most famous example, the way McDonalds started asking "Would you like fries with that?"

That's suggestive selling. It's not as bad as calling up someone who has no idea who you are and begging them to buy something, but it's still annoying, and now it's part of the score they grade our calls on. Bleh. Luckily I'm good at it, even if I do hate it.
