This is from Bad Astronomy blog http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/2008/08/22/antivaxxers-must-be-stopped-now/ Please read the full content there. Not so sure I like that drama in the title, but the article is good.

I guess I will be spreading the plague with my child :) I don't vax. Not for autism reasons (though yes, I still believe there is a link, no matter what this says. I have done a lot of research myself), but for other reasons. My kiddo has an extremely strong immune system now (MUCH stronger than his fully-vaxed half brother), and that makes me happy. I will leave the vaccinations to the people who really need it (immunocompromised folks and the like).

In no way do I intend to rail against you for your choice. I enjoyed the article because it finally showed some of the real and current statistics. My personal thinking is that vaccinations are a good thing, but I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Libertarian and I'll fight next to you for your right to choose against them for yourself and your child.

By the way, I'm thinking about you a LOT these days. I really want to know more, but don't want to burden you simply out of my own curiosity. I do hope you feel like journaling more in the days to come. *hug*

I can understand wanting to avoid a recently developed vaccine for something until possible side effects are better known, but the "vaccines cause AUTISM, avoid them ALL!" people drive me nuts, both for pseudoscience and safety reasons. I mean, I'm highly phobic around needles and I'll still acknowledge the importance of vaccines for honestly nasty things. It helps how quickly they're over and done with :p.

(edit for my Benadryl-fueled typos)

Agreed. The one that gets me is the Gardisal vaccine. It's far too new to have been thoroughly tested. Yet, people are all up in arms against anyone who says anything bad about it. *sigh* I believe in vaccinations because the data is out there that makes it's point logically. Gardisil, on the other hand is far too new, and is being promoted via hype more than anything.

It's a terribly misleading title. I thought it was going to be about some group that fears and despises mainframe computers. =D

I believe in vaccinations, as long as they don't contain a toxic substance such as mercury. That's my biggest concern, but what I understand there are mercury free alternatives to the vaccines so that doesn't matter no more.
