I have good luck with watching portion sizes. I try not to go out to eat too often, and when I do, I make sure to take at least half my entree home. (Saves money too, I get at least two, sometimes three or four meals for the price of one.) Also, if I'm having a drink that's not water (milk or juice), I can cut way back on calories without feeling deprived just by not filling my cup up as full. Same goes for plates and bowls when you're eating at home - use smaller containers.
I also generally let myself eat as many fresh fruits and vegetables as I want, since the goal is to become healthier. If you're suffering from hunger, filling up on carrots or celery or even berries of some kind really can't be bad for you, in my mind. :)
Oh, and drink lots of water. Flush out the bad stuff.
I also sleep like a rock when I'm exercising. :)
