This past weekend, I had the distinct pleasure of reading two short novels (novellas really) by George R.R. Martin set 100 years before his masterful A song of Ice and fire saga. They are "the Hedge Knight" and "the Sworn Sword", and concern the goings on of Dunk and his squire Egg.

The Essence of fiction
In an essay printed in the reader's guide in the back of my copy of Kindred, Robert Crossley had a line about the nature of fiction that I thought was the very reason we are fascinated by such writings:
"...Every good work of fiction is paradoxical: It lies like the truth."

Crooked Little Vein
I'm about 3/4 of the way through Warren Ellis' debut novel Crooked Little Vein, and I'm enjoying every surrealistic, crazed, hilarious depraved minute of it.
Warren Ellis, as I'm sure most of you know has written several excellent graphic novels/comics such as The Authority and Transmetropolitan.
