I need to know: Is there something about becoming a parent that turns you into an accident-prone pet-killing machine, or do my parents just have an extremely bad track record between them

Oh my gosh. That is awful. Yet horribly amusing... I am so sorry. Sounds to me like your folks would get tired of the pets and they would meet their demise. How terrible.
Well, that may have been the case with Academy (though I'm pretty sure there were other fish in the household, but on the other hand he was the only one who ate bloodworms instead of fish flakes) but my dad killed Scrappy while I was living with my mom, so the rat didn't reside in his house anyway. And Bicky had just recovered from a several-month bout with ringworm, during which time my grandmother suggested "why don't we just put this kitty to sleep and get a new kitty?" If my mother didn't concoct an "accident" during the ringworm episode, I strongly doubt it was intentional just as we moved beyond that stage.
I try to laugh at it now. My dad says that he and my mom had just filed for divorce and he wasn't in a proper state of mind, and that's why Scrappy was left in the car. So I'll give him that. But my mom seems to just be casually violent. :-p
Hrm. My parents were always pretty good with Animals. There was one incident where my uncles "magic bunny" (He was a professional magician) got out of its cage while we were pet-sitting, and our cat caught it and ate it.
I hope that with my son is old enough to be able to have pets, I will continue to be the responsible pet-owner I am. (3 fish tanks, pond, 2 cats... and some day, maybe a dog)
Your mom must be some kind of killer to figure out how to kill an oscar. In my brother's hobby of negligent fish keeping, those oscars refused to die. They just got bigger and bigger as all the pretty fish floated to the surface above them.

Glad you learned to snarl.

On the other hand, I love it that you had a fish named Academy.

I do not have a pet. This is a good thing.
