(News I Saw This Morning)...
- Five people were dead after a gunman stepped on stage during a crowded heavy metal concert in Columbus, Ohio around 10 o'clock last night and opened fire.
The gunman Nathan Gale, 25-year-old, of Marysville, Ohio (who is believed knew band members). began shooting at the Dallas-based band, "Damageplan", which includes former members of the heavy metal band "Pantera" popular metal band of the early 1990's, and killed guitarist Darrell "Dimebag" Abbott, 38-years-old. He was shot to death as he took the stage with "Damageplan" and began to play the first song of the concert at the Alrosa Villa nightclub.
He then started shooting into the crowd before being shot dead by a police officer who had been near the club at the time of the shooting.
Police Sergeant Brent Mull as saying that the gunman was "targeting members in the band."
The shooting started just as the band began its first song.
Police said one of the wounded was in critical condition, while the other sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Two other people were treated at the scene. -
FOR THOSE WHO ARE NOT AWARE I AM A BIG FAN OF PANTERA AND DAMAGEPLAN.
-"Dimebag" guitarist Darrell Abbott and drummer Vinnie Paul (both brothers) formed "Damageplan" in early 2003, soon after the demise of their previous band, thrash metal "Pantera". Other members are vocalist Patrick Lachman and bassist Bob Zilla.
The brothers began working on tracks at Dime's Dallas home studio, unsure of exactly what they'd do with the material, but determined to banish the bad taste of Pantera's awkward breakup.
Ex-Halford and -Diesel Machine guitarist (and full-time Dime pal) Pat Lachman heard the demos and expressed interest in singing for the project. While he'd never served as a frontman, Lachman's performances over the raw material were strong enough to land him the vocalist position.
The lineup was completed with the addition of local bassist Bob Kakaha, who was immediately dubbed Bob Zilla for his monstrous tone, and the quartet began hashing out the new material under the working title of "New Found Power", album dropped in February 2004.
By October 2003, they'd decided on "Damageplan", with "New Found Power" becoming the name of their Elektra debut.
Guests on the record included guitarist "Zakk Wylde" (Which I am big fan of) and "Slipknot" vocalist "Corey Taylor"; "Damageplan" spent most of January 2004 on a promotional tour before gearing up for an aggressive round of dates that spring and summer.-
