Some people are like that, angry and bitter, and so won't be missed. Sometimes they do that on purpose for exactly that reason. Other times it is just their nature.

Interestingly, his wife has told me that he didn't used to be like this. When he was a young man he befriended an older rich man who was an asshole to everyone around him. Apparently this impressed FIL so much (gods know why) that he began to emulate him.
