The Long Book Survey Of...doom. [grinning]

So, you know how you get those, "do one of these questions a day," 30-question surveys? I got one on books, and it probably took me at least a day per question, but instead of prolonging the agony, here's all of them at once. Agree with a lot of your answers. Probably rate Night Watch above Thud!, though. Agree on Chanur, but am less fond of Cherryh's Fortress series than of her Merchanter books. The Silmarillion is not a novel. Part history book, part compilation of folk tales, and not all that exciting even judged by those standards. But I've always thought Left Hand of Darkness was good.

Night Watch was much grittier a thriller than Thud!, which at its heart was probably more of a fairy tale. I liked both, don't get me wrong, but Thud! swept me up in a story, where Night Watch gave me noir glimpses of the human spirit.

I probably owe Left Hand of Darkness another read. I was annoyed at my Dad for giving it to me as an assignment. [grinning]

I am really mixed on Cherryh - I either really like it or can't stand it - there's no "maybe" for me. The Fortress books are the only fantasy stuff of hers I've liked, at least so far, so I probably include it for balance.
