Mexico: 'Si' to gay civil union

The headline could have been worded better, I know...

Mexico has approved civil unions for unmarried couples, both gay and straight. The article also mentions a few other countries that have actually legalized gay marriage and others that have simply allowed civil unions for unmarried couples.

One thing that seems to be a a trend amongst the countries that have legalized gay marriage, or a similar legal relationship: they seperate the legal marriage from the religious marriage. Mexico has for years had seperation between religious and state marriages, to the degree that there are two separate ceremonies. Whether or not a church choses to recognize the union is left to the church, rather than allowing churches to dictate the existance of a union in the first place. It is almost sad that Mexico and Spain, very Catholic countries with a long history of being controlled by the Church, have both been more successful in separating church and state than the US, a country in which that is one of our founding principles.
