I feel sorry for the Augsburg Pep Band.

I'm taking some classes at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, a fairly small liberal arts school. While looking at their website, I noticed that one student had started a pep band this year, and thought, "Oh, good for her." Well, on the good side of things, at least you have the actual volume control of the group. Imagine if it'd been 7 people with 3 clarinets, a flute, the trumbone, the snare and the director/founder/bass drum. So, gotta take it slow and steady when a group is so young ( ... )

In all seriousness, USE your experience, but I agree with your friend in that you don't want to be that guy.

And there is NOTHING wrong with marching. Nothing whatsoever.

To counter what everyone else is saying... there's something seriously wrong with marching when your members can't find their ass with two hands and a map, musically speaking. Focus on the important stuff at first... starting off on the same beat and at the same rhythm, get a couple songs that you can make it all the way through without a trainwreck, and make sure people are having a good time.

So, in other words, do it like tech does it - musicianship and fun above all else, and leave the dance lessons for someone else. Just leave the stripes and the funny hats at home.
