i look forward to the day when i can make money off my art and save it or put it towards something that will last rather than dumping it back into bills and overdraft fees. its sad to see your hard work in what you enjoy go to something so temporary ( Read more... )

re-writing it gave me a little revelation:

When i make art, i'm putting a part of my soul into it. and if i sell it, the little money i make off of it goes to temporary things (bills, overdraft fees, etc), leaving me feel almost like i'm, for lack of a better term, prostituting myself. my creativity is being used in vain or for the wrong purposes, not because i want it to, but because i've chosen to allow it to pay the bills. perhaps it HAS been in vain. perhaps the profit needs to go to others who need it, and specifically NOT towards bills. hmm.. interesting..What are you doing God?

In a way, that's one of the reasons I've been hesitant to sell any of my photography. I enjoy taking the shot, editing it to make it just right, and sharing it with others, but on some level the idea of getting money for it feels like it cheapens the experience. I've had people ask for shots and I readily gave them away for free, but when they ask if they can "buy" a shot, I won't do it. I guess it comes down to business and passion, and how they interrelate. As I think about it, I'm realizing it's a pretty deep topic. Thanks for the food for thought.
