Blue eyes

Lee stepped inside the joint where they'd set up a date - actual date, not just driving home from work and sprawling on the couch and watching something or talking or, well, other things, which might or might not happen anyway, only later - and squinted against the setting. The air was warmer than outside - October was beginning to bite - and he shed his jacket pretty quickly as he was trying to get used to the noise - ramble of a restaurant, a pretty decent piano player in the fits of a song the words to which showed up in Lee's mind and faded, the talk of many people who were finding conversation more interesting than the food itself.

A moment later, the greeter appeared as though from the ground, her pretty smile almost real. "Do you have a reservation, sir?"

"Yes, Nicholas, party of two."

"Ah yes. The other gentleman is already seated. This way, please."

And she started winding her way between the tables, giving him a chance to look around better. It was cool, really. There were even tiny tea candles on each table, and that amused him.

When he caught sight of his boyfriend, Lee reached a hand to stop the greeter. "Thank you, I'll be fine from here." She raised her pretty brows, but nodded and slipped back, heading towards her position at the front.

Lee stood for a moment, watching the familiar slump, the tired face looking down at the table and showing way too much exhaustion for too young an age. Then he looked around, squinting slightly and gauging the music.

A few minutes later, the tune changed to something slower, quieter.

And, right on cue, Lee's voice started caressing the words a moment before he stepped around the pianoforte.

Blue eyes
Baby's got blue eyes
Like a deep blue sea
On a blue blue day
Blue eyes
Baby's got blue eyes
When the morning comes
I'll be far away
And I say

Those eyes, those familiar, beautiful eyes, wide and startled, had risen and focused on him, a slight quiver to the delicate lips.

Lee sang on.

Blue eyes
Holding back the tears
Holding back the pain
Baby's got blue eyes
And he's alone again

And on. His boyfriend shook himself, the surprise melting in a small smile, and he put an elbow on the table so he could lean his chin on his hand, listening. Eyebrows cocked just a little cynically. And just enough not cynically to let Lee know that he had struck a chord.

Blue eyes laughing in the sun
Laughing in the rain
Baby's got blue eyes
And I am home, and I am home again

The music wound back down; shortly, so did the applause.

Lee thanked the pianist, came down the dais which held the instrument, and, not long after, finally made his way to his table.

"Can't resist the spotlight, hmm?"

It wasn't exactly the words he'd expected, but not too bad, anyway.

"Now and again." Lee grinned, then sat down, the most innocent expression on his face. "Did you order already?"

The surprised laughter which answered was good enough.
