Barry coughed loudly, waking Lucas who had been sitting beside him. They were camped out at Lake Verity, waiting for the Legendary Pokemon of the Lake to come out. Unfortunately for them, it was freezing and no such thing was going to happen any time soon, not that they knew. They were each wrapped up in their own blankets, sitting against the same tree, overlooking the lake and the cave in the middle of it.
Lucas sighed, thinking that Barry had seen the Legendary Pokemon, and wrapped the blanket tighter around himself. Good thing Lucas had grabbed some of the warmest blankets at his house for him and Barry, otherwise they'd be freezing. He shot a side glance at Barry, concern in his eyes. Barry looked over and caught his eye.
"What? I'll be fine, Lucas, don't worry about me! A little cold won't stop me from catching that Legendary Pokemon... BRR! It sure is cold, Lucas." But there was nothing but determination shown on his face and in his eyes as his hand fumbled out of the warmth of the blanket so he could check the time on his Poketch. Lucas looked over, his face almost touching Barry's shoulder. Only 22:45; they'd been out there for two hours and it had already felt like two days.
"How long will we be out here for?" Lucas asked.
"Until we see that Pokemon, I told you!" Barry sniffed then coughed again, yawning right after that. Running around all day really exhausted a kid.
"Okay, well, if you see it, wake me up. I'm tired." Lucas yawned as well and rested his head on Barry's shoulder.
"Hmph. Fine, but I get to capture it." Barry said, bringing his knees up to his chest. The blanket was so soft and fuzzy, almost like his back at his house...
"Barry, wake up!" Lucas whispered, shaking his friend. Barry yawned and blinked a few times, turning his head to look at Lucas.
"What?" he asked groggily, wiping at his eye while yawning again. He looked at his Poketch - 3:08.
"Look, look!" Lucas excitedly pointed at the cave and nearly dragged Barry up to the shoreline. Barry instantly woke up when he saw a small Pokemon flying around, a pink aura around it. He gasped and looked at Lucas with a beam.
"That's it! That's the Legendary Pokemon of the Lake! We did it!" They both watched in awe as it flew around, its pink aura leaving a tail from where it had been to where it was. It seemed to notice them but wasn't afraid; on the contrary, it was playing with them, flying in between them making friendly noises.
All desire to capture it was gone for Barry; he just wanted to play with it. He held out his hand and Mesprit landed on his arm, the aura gone and its two tails hanging loosely. He glanced at Lucas, both of them laughing.
"Can you believe this?" Lucas asked in a whisper as Mesprit left Barry and went to Lucas, tugging his hat off his head. "Hey! Give that back!"
Mesprit casually flew backwards towards Barry, Lucas' hat in its mouth. It dropped it on Barry's head, making a backflip into the water. Barry gently handed Lucas' hat back to him, an awed smile on his face as he leaned over to see if Mesprit would surface. Lucas stood right behind him, readjusting his hat.
"Oh man, I think it left," Barry said after a few minutes of nothing happening. They both relaxed, unaware of how tense they had been while waiting for it to come back.
"It was fun while it lasted," Lucas said with a shrug, heading back to where their stuff was. Barry nodded, taking one last look at the lake before turning around to follow Lucas.
"I guess we can go home now," Barry said, wrapping the blanket around himself as he stretched his body. "I don't think it's coming back." Lucas smiled - the real reason was Barry was too impatient to wait any longer to play. They both started heading back, silent as they each tried not to fall asleep on the way home.
"Okay. I'll see you later, Barry!" Lucas said, waving at Barry as they neared their own houses. Barry waved back, not bothering to cover his mouth as he yawned.
"10:00 at Lake Verity tomorrow. And if you're late, I'm fining you ten million!"
