Hey, guess what! SPOILERS AHEAD!

Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

My brain is all spoilers. Spoiler warning was set on for a reason. DO NOT READ THIS IF YOU HAVE NOT FINISHED THE BOOK.

Well, I predicted every twist and turn long before they occurred, though I'm not saying that's a bad thing. It's because that's how I thought a good story would go, and it did.

Unlike Mare, I was not fooled by the things she later realized were so obvious-- Maven was too perfect. He said all the right things, reacted just right. His only flaw was his clear love for his mother, which is when I knew he was working with her, against everyone else. I thought it was POSSIBLE that Farley was in on the plans too, but I was less sure of that one.

I think my tendency to latch on to the first person the main characters develops feelings for helped here, too. The more she ranted about not trusting Cal and thinking Maven was better, the more I believed that Cal was the one to trust. Sure, he made some poor choices and was unwilling to fight for change, but at least he wasn't hiding anything, unlike his brother. He was always honest about who he was and what he wanted from the people around him.

I think I say it every time I read a story with a plot related to this, but you can NEVER believe an important character is dead if they die "off screen". ESPECIALLY if it's an assumption. Farley is dead. Kilorn is dead. My family is dead. Umm... no, they're not, and I'm not even sure Shade is dead, either. #win.

I'm sure I will have more put-together thoughts at some point, but I literally just finished the book and my brain is scattered.

Anyway... book 2. I'm still rooting for Cal and Mave, partly because I really never got the "relationship" vibe from her and Kilorn, even though I think we were supposed to...? Maybe that will come with book 2, since we didn't see them together all that much in this one. But I'm on team Cal. As of now, I will go down with that ship.

Obviously, they will have to hunt down he others with the powers that Mare and Shade have, racing Maven to the names. We have to assume Julian will be forced to release all he knows. I just hope he won't be killed before Mare can get to him. We also need some sort of way to unite the sympathetic Silvers and the Guard, because obviously Cal (and Julian?) will have to have a role in the future.

Anyway... that's all I've got for now. Thoughts/agreements/arguments are welcomed!

This one seems a bit longer than most of my Goodreads rants, but it's still MUCH shorter than most of the rants on here. Again, I think it being a single book helps. The next several books I plan to read are actually single books, as well (for now). This is the problem with getting pulled into fandoms early. *waits for news of book 2*
