The Heretic

Last night in my dream, I saw a heretic burning;
The man that I saw was lamenting and yearning;
For nothing more than his own school of learning;
And I wonder what would happen if I too was burning.

The smoke that arose from his body was white;
I was alarmingly curious, but not so contrite;
Bravely he tried, but still he failed in flight;
And I wonder if my smoke would be white.

My head started spinning as I inhaled the fumes;
Like naught but the incense that I store in my rooms;
Though before me I clearly spied many tombs;
And I wonder, where travel those fumes?

The people surrounded me, eager to shout;
I stood and absorbed what they were screaming about;
Persecutions rained down, and all due to doubt;
And I wonder why the people did shout.

As I watched him, I noticed his fingers had curled;
His spirit then rose with the smoke and unfurled;
His final scream sent shivers through the world;
And I wonder if his fingers uncurled.
