How can a designer put this out? I realize CDs don't have the real estate of an LP anymore... but these examples are just huge wastes of space.

I don't know, I thought some of these weren't bad -- the first is pretty, and the flaming lips and leonard cohen ones are retro/homage. Certainly better than one of the ones you thought was "best".

It's just a matter of taste.

I kind of dug the Springsteen and Cohen. Springsteen's album is as bleak and datk as the cover suggests, while Cohen seems to be luxuriating in his status as the grand old man of music. To each his own I guess.

I sometimes wonder what the justification is for some of the album art I see, and I don't even mean the newer albums either, but some of the older ones that have been around for a long time, does the image convey anything about the album?

That is what I try to do with my cover art, or at the very least it's very stylish and, well, graphicy in its design.

At least I try to put some thought into what I build for my CD projects.
