Substitute poppies for puppies, but don't eat them!
For color I love snapdragons. I still have some lavender which I haven't killed too. I recommend nasturtiums, they are easy peasy to grow from seed, smell of spicy pepper and nectar, drape beautifully over railings or baskets, are tasty to eat on salads, and make their own seeds for next year. Just don't fertilize them or they will be all about greens and not about flowers.
I am sticking with a few deck flowers and dahlias for this year (I almost wrote dharmalias, I wonder what it is they have to teach me). Happy for you. I like that you are thinking of your plants like puppies, they need nurturing!
