In the NZ Herald today there's news of a split within Destiny Church's Brisbane branch.

It is believed Pastor Stock - who has been at the Brisbane branch pulpit for about three years - withdrew from his role because a newly introduced covenant went against his beliefs, a member said ( Read more... )

Advice I got before I signed an employment contract with an exclusion clause like that for the first time was that they aren't legally enforceable anyway, since it's unrealistic to expect that someone in a specialised field should be barred from working in that field just because they chose to leave. These clauses exist to prevent poaching of talent by competition (in my case, my new employer had to do a certain amount to reassure my old boss that they weren't competing in the same market, even though I couldn't WAIT to leave, and had made no secret of the fact), and to stop employees siphoning knowledge and clients out of a company, but that seems unlikely in this case anyway. I assume it's the same in Australia when it comes to exclusion clauses, I hope so.

I agree with you that the sensationalist approach isn't fair or warranted. Whilst I have dubious feelings about Destiny's tithing program and the covenant it isn't right to disturb a service. If they wanted an interview then they should have made an appointment with Brian Tamaki or a spokesperson. But then our media can be quite tabloid in its way.
