I was having a similar question with a friend yesterday who was about to finish her Marriage & Family Therapy degree. She could not figure out yet what she wanted to specialize in. My advice for her was to flip a coin, j/k. I thought the work she found the most challenging, the one that didn't seem the most natural would be best for her. Its easy to get into a rut with things that are familiar. IMO, you're constantly having to tweak your skillsets and yourself to master that which is not normal for yourself.

i like your advice, but i think that'll only work with a select few... for myself, when i work i put 110% into it and my projects are like my little babies, i fall in love with them so if it wasn't the most natural thing for me to be doing i wouldn't be able to give it my all or i would always doubt myself "could i have done better?" ... which is something i do anyways. lol

its a hard question to ask yourself, the good thing about the field of design is we have fall backs and every project as routine as it may get is very different.
