What's Here is Mine

“Penny,” Sheldon says. “I left my pen in your car.”

“So?” Penny looks up at Sheldon with no little degree of irritation. He scowls.

“I require my pen, Penny,” he says.

“Sheldon,” she sighs, “Use a different pen.”

“Penny-”

“Ohmi-you’re serious, aren’t you? I’m not going outside-I’m in my comfortable sweats.”

“Penny,” Sheldon whines, and she glares at him.

“Take my keys,” she says. “You’re a big boy, you can go alone.”

Sheldon takes the key. “I’ll be back in a few minutes,” he says, and she nods, and waves him off.

(Vampires)
1. Clocks - Coldplay

Singin’, come out upon my seas
Curse missed opportunities
Am I, a part of the cure
Or am I part of the disease

It’s cold outside. Sheldon crosses his arms a little firmer in front of himself and walks to Penny’s car, trying to ignore an odd feeling of foreboding. Foreboding, he scoffs to himself. As if.

He tries to shrug it off.

On the street corner, a man is leaning against the wall. He’s looking Sheldon’s way, but Sheldon ignores him, instead focusing on where the pen has fallen.

And then a hand grabs him from behind, twisting him until he’s pressed out along the car, cool fingertips holding him in place. “Don’t you just look delicious?” a voice asks, and Sheldon lets out a muffled shout and then a mouth has descended onto his neck and sharp teeth prick his skin.

This is ridiculous, he thinks through his terror. This is patently impossible.

The arms holding him down are like steel, with no give at all, and he can feel the person actually sucking the blood out of his body.

I’m not going to even dignify it by thinking the word, Sheldon thinks, except his defiance is slipping away, because illogical or not it’s happening, his fingers digging into metal.

A hand pulls his head back and twists his body until his mouth is visible, and he can make out the figure clothed in dark clothes, feel blood spilling down his neck.

The man bites into his own wrist and then presses it to Sheldon’s mouth, and Sheldon tries to twist away, the thought of blood being forced into his mouth hitting every single possible terror he’s ever had, the thought of disease and disgust and anger spilling around, and still the smallest part of him, unable to deny the word anymore: Vampires.

The man releases him and steps back, grinning. Sheldon, blood on his lips, on his neck, stays against the car, dizzy.

“Why?” he asks weakly. The man (vampire) grabs him by his shirt and pulls him up before shoving him back into the wall of the apartment building.

“We’re recruiting,” he says.

(“Car” - Mystery Machine)
2. Car Underwater - Armor For Sleep

Believe the news, I'm gone for good.
Call off the search, no one will know that I'm down here
Believe the note I left for you
You can't turn back the clocks, you can't pull me up from here, so don't try

Sheldon curls in on himself, his back against the wall, his breath loud in his ears, and he can’t-can’t think, can think past the sound of his pulse, the sound of the wind, and everything sounds too loud, too much, too-

He stumbles, almost drunkenly, except he doesn’t drink, he doesn’t-

He’s still human, he thinks. Still human enough. Because he’s never believed in superstitions, and he scoffed at the nightmares Missy had of demons and devils hovering just beyond reach, but Sheldon Cooper’s not an idiot. There’s blood on his neck, wiped off only temporarily on his hand, and the way his vision goes in out and, the way his feet are unsteady-

(“Contagion” the headlines had said online, and he should have read more, should never have gone outside alone-)

He doesn’t drive. He never drives. Except this is an emergency.

(If pressed, he probably wouldn’t have thought himself brave enough to do this.)

The keys are still in his hand, and he starts the engine, and lets it go. Keeps his foot off the brake. For a moment, his entire body weakening, he’s not sure if he’ll get there in time-and then he sees the lake ahead, and presses down on the gas, and-

3. By the Way - Theory of a Deadman

By the way, you left without saying goodbye to me.
Now that you're gone away, all I can think about is
You and me, you and me.

The news is telling everyone to stay inside. There’s a contagion out there, they say, and people are turning into things out of horror novels. There’s no explanation, no explanation of how that can be, but at night, outside Penny’s window, she can hear the sound of howling and screams.

She stays inside.

She talked to Howard that first day. He was at Raj’s, and they were both safe for the moment, preparing to stay inside for as long as needed, still unsure whether to be concerned at the situation. When the power turned off, though, the phone lines went down, and their cell phones died. Maybe, Penny thinks, the two of them have rigged something up, but she wouldn’t know where to start.

Sheldon is gone.

He went outside, just for a moment that night, and he never came back. She went to look for him, because unlike Sheldon she’s always been okay flaunting rules and regulations. There was blood on the wall, and a man turned to her with blood on his mouth, and when she curled up, back upstairs, couch shoved in front of her door and heart pounding from how fast she’d just run, she called the police. The lines were all busy.

No one seems to know where Leonard is. He had a date that night, and no one got a hold of him before the phones died.

Penny stays inside.

4. Haunted - Evanescence

Long lost words whisper slowly to me
Still can't find what keeps me here
When all this time I've been so hollow inside
I know you're still there

At some point after he sank into the lake, fingers twisting in the seatbelt, feeling himself fade away in more ways than one, and terrified that the-the vampire would beat death (and he’s not a vampire, he’s a homo novus, he will not allow himself to be debased, to be transformed, to be-

At some point after, he opens his eyes. He’s standing in Penny’s apartment.

Penny, dark circles underneath her eyes from lack of sleep, is standing in the kitchen. The room is lit only by candles, and the power seems to be out everywhere.

“Penny?” he asks, but she doesn’t seem to hear. Ah, he thinks. “I’m dead, aren’t I?”

Penny wipes a hand across her face, her dirty hair tied up in a bun. The entire counter is full of containers of water, and he is ridiculously pleased that she thought of that, that she prepared herself.

“Penny,” he says, because even if she can’t hear him there’s something comforting about saying her name.

At night, when she can’t hold back the tears, exhaustion consuming her, she curls up, and he sits next to her, a hand on her arm that she cannot feel, words falling from his lips that she cannot hear.

“Penny,” he says. “Penny, you’ll be all right.”

(He feels helpless, impotent, terrified for her. He’s not sure why he’s here, what’s keeping him here, what’s-)

“Sheldon,” she whispers, looking out the window into the black night, her face lit only by moonlight. She turns, and for a moment he thinks she sees him.

“Penny,” he says, his not-breath brushing against her cheek. His hand brushes her and she jerks back, eyes wide.

(Witches)
5. Howl - Florence and the Machine

If you could only see the beast you've made of me
I held it in but now it seems you've set it running free
The saints can't help me now, the ropes have been unbound
I hunt for you with bloodied feet across the hallowed ground

They’re in the building. She knows they’re in the building, because she can hear them, walking, their gaits abnormal. She can hear them, and she can hears screams from inside, and she can hear them pause sometimes outside her door, breathing in and out heavily, smelling for her, looking for her.

There’s something else, too-she can feel it, feel the weight of someone’s eyes on her, feel the touch of someone not there.

(She doesn’t know why she thinks it could be Sheldon. She doesn’t know why she hopes it is.)

She’s got food, still, but even though she put water in every available container she had, including things like pencil cups and empty beer bottles, she know it won’t last.

(And still, she thinks, still she can feel him there next to her, waiting.)

The first time she sees someone use magic on the street below, the flash of light she can see from her window, her heart skips a beat. And maybe she’s counting too much on luck and chance, but she’s never calculated odds, and she’s always leapt before looking.

“Magic,” she says, and then she looks up, to her left, like she can see Sheldon rolling his eyes, even though she can’t, even though maybe she’s finally cracked.

(She’s always believed in the possibility of magic. She’s never constrained herself the way the boys did, too sure that tarot cards and astronomy were “hokum.”)

She’s got a couple of books on magic tucked away in her closet, hidden under some clothes after that disastrous moment two years ago when Leonard was still her boyfriend and laughed his ass off at her. Ever since then she’s kept them hidden, like a secret, hidden away safe.

(She can almost hear Sheldon sigh as she takes them out.)

Still, when she takes out her runes and places them on the ground, and threatens thin air rather severely, one of the stones turns over. Sheldon, she thinks, tears on her cheeks, air caught in her lungs.

“Sheldon?” she asks, and she thinks she can feel a hand on her cheek. She closes her eyes.

“Penny,” he whispers.

6. Every You Every Me - Placebo

All alone in space and time.
There's nothing here but what here's mine.
Something borrowed, something blue.
Every me and every you.
Every me and every you.

Penny lights candles like she knows what she’s doing, and when there’s a circle of them (and she can almost hear Sheldon freaking out about the fire hazard), she sits in the middle. She keeps a mirror balanced on her lap. She has no fucking idea what she’s doing, but she likes to think she’s a natural at this, that this is all instinct and gut and emotion, and everything that she’s good at and the boys aren’t.

When she puts a hand palm down on the mirror and the other palm up in midair, eyes closed, waiting, she’s not sure what she’s expecting. Except then she can feel the weight of a hand on her own.

“Sheldon?” she asks.

“Yes,” he says, and, he sounds shocked, too, by the feel of her skin. Her eyes start to snap open, but he puts a hand over them. “Don’t,” he says, “Don’t, I think-”

“Don’t leave,” she begs. I can’t be alone anymore.

His thin fingers trail down her cheek, and she thinks what it must be like to only be able to watch, to only be able to exist halfway.

“Penny,” he says, and there’s a note she’s never heard before in his voice, but she recognizes it all the same. Her chin tilts up.

“I know,” she says, and his lips press to hers, and she pours everything she is into him.

And when she opens his eyes he’s still there.

There, kneeling on the ground, color and shape and scent, and her mouth falls open in surprise as he stares at her.

“Penny?” he says, and she laughs at his shock. She doesn’t know what this is.

(Maybe she doesn’t care, either.)

That night, when it starts raining outside, they lie together. Her legs curl against his, his arm rests against her stomach.

“Penny,” he whispers against her neck, and she shivers and holds him tighter.

They go through the books together, ignoring the sounds in the hallway, ignoring the sound of banging and screaming and crying, the way footsteps pause outside the door and wait.

The next evening, as the sun sets, she turns them into bats and they fly out the window, and the city around them is unrecognizable.

She looks down once, and then stops, because how can she help anyone?

7. Dance Halls Turn to Ghost Towns - The Audition

Stolen everything you worked for,
love was lost but better to remember,
left side, left side suicide.

Please take off your lab coat and kiss me as we roll,
please put on your dance shoes and join me in this waltz.

Out in the country, they find a house. Whoever used to live there is gone, and no one seems to be around for miles. They make trips to steal food from supermarkets. They find shotguns, and melt down silver. They only go out during the day.

They look for Raj and Howard, but Raj’s place is empty. The door is torn in, but there’s no blood. Penny says they must have escaped, and Sheldon stays quiet.

At night, they curl in on each other against the cold.

They sleep with knives under their pillows.

His fingers spread along her hip, her lips brush against his, they move in rhythm against the night.

(They survive.)
