Here is a very interesting paper: "On the Extinction of the Japanese Wolf". The article was written by John Knight, for the Asian Folklore Studies journal, in 1997. It is an examination of wolf sightings since 1905 (when it officially supposedly went extinct), wolves in folklore, and also the meaning of forest people's desire for the wolf's
