Character's full name: Tohru Honda
Series: Fruits Basket
Gender: Female
Age: 15
Personality: Tohru is a warm kind and loving person who goes out of her way to help others and hates being a burden. In canon, when we first meet her, she is living in a tent out in the woods and paying for her own schooling by working as a cleaning woman in an office building. This is because her grandfather, who she had been living with since her mother died, was having his house renovated and was living with her aunt and her family who only had room for him. He'd told her to go stay with friends, but she didn't want to inconvenience her friends, so she chose to live on her own. This is an example of what great lengths she will go to not be a burden to others, which can sometimes be a little too far.
She's very open and honest about herself for the most part, but there are parts of her that she keeps carefully hidden, including her abandonment issues, born of her father's death when she was very little. She tries not to talk about the painful parts of her past in order to not bother people with her own problems and also out of a fear that if she were to reveal her weaknesses to people then they would leave her, but at the same time she's more than glad to help her friends in their own personal struggles. She doesn't like people to see the scared young girl she hides behind a smile most of the time and avoids the subject of her own fears and worries concerning herself as much as possible. She also tries a bit too hard not to offend people and will often over think things.
She doesn't always seem to be particularly intelligent, being easily confused and quite gullible at times, but she is brave, loyal, hard working, self-motivated, thoughtful and very compassionate.
Fairy tale/myth/legend: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Role: Snow White
Kingdom territory of origin: The Northern Region
Adaptation:
Her mother was a former bandit and her father was the youngest son of the royal family and brother to the king. They were the most unlikely of pairs, but they were happy, and the loved eachother and their daughter very much. When Tohru was still very young however, her father became ill and died. Her mother despaired at first, but after a while, she resolved not to give up on her life while her daughter still needed her, and she continued to raise the girl. Both were looked down on by the rest of the family for her mother's former station and they weren't really allowed to even live in the castle now that her father was dead, but her mother, Kyoko, taught young Tohru to not let other people's opinion of her keep her down, to not give up and to always be herself. Lessons that she always tries to take to heart to this day. Since they didn't actually have any support from her father's family, her mother was often busy working to support them both, so Tohru took care of the cooking and cleaning. She became very good at it over the years and developed an excellent work ethic.
The King meanwhile had a wife who was both very beautiful and very vain who was well versed in witch craft. She possessed a magic mirror which she often gazed into. Every day she would ask the mirror who the was the fairest in the land and every day the mirror would answer that it was her, and she was satisfied. However as Tohru grew older, she also grew prettier, though more so on the inside than without. One day the mirror told the shocked and outraged queen that while she was quite beautiful, Tohru was even more so (Inner beauty being that much more important than outer). This upset the Queen, who couldn't understand how this could possibly be true and as Tohru grew older the queen came to hate the girl more and more.
One day Tohru's mother also died in a horrible accident. Being a member of the royal family, Tohru would normally be taken in by her uncle and live in the palace, but the Queen did not want this. However, she didn't wish to reveal her hatred for the girl to her husband, so she instead found an opportunity to quietly get rid of her.
It just so happened that this kingdom held a festival every year in the summer, and the girls who attended liked to make crowns of wild flowers a day or so before to wear to the festival. Tohru had gone to that festival every year and was not about to let her mother's untimely death stop her from attending this year as well, her friends would be going after all, so she wished to go out and collect flowers to make her crown for that year. The King wouldn't let his niece go out without an escort and so he sent a huntsman out with her, but unknown to either of them, the Queen had given the huntsman special instructions to take Tohru as deep into the forest as possible and kill her there, taking her heart back with him as proof of the deed.
So Tohru set out into the forest with the huntsman and gathered wild flowers and as they walked deeper in, Tohru spoke to the man and he found himself telling her things about his life and work with her happily listening to him and asking him questions with genuine interest. She was so kind to him that he couldn't bear to carry out his orders, so he finally broke down and told her the truth of why he had brought her out so far. He told her that for her own good, she should run and never come back, for she would never be safe in the kingdom as long as the Queen was alive and so jealous of her. Tohru was greatly saddened by this, but eventually did as she was urged to, continuing into the forest as the huntsman took a deer's heart back with him in an attempt to fool the queen.
This however, left Tohru lost and alone in the forest with nothing but the clothes on her back, the basket of flowers she had been collecting, a picnic lunch she had also brought with her, and the picture of her mother, which she had always carried with her since her mother's death. She was determined to survive however, and continued onwards into the woods, in search ofshelter.
[This will be where she enters Mukashi.
Of course I made a few changes to fit a bit of Tohru's original back story in. It wouldn't have worked so well if I'd made her the King's daughter and the Queen her stepmother like in the version that I was using, so she's the King's niece now. The festival was mainly my own invention, as the reason why she went out into the forest with the huntsman to pick flowers. Also, most versions of the tale say that Snow White's beauty is what saves her from being killed by the huntsman, but in this case it's because Tohru made friends with him, which I think fits her pretty well.
Eventually what will happen, loosely, is of course, the Queen will eventually discover that Tohru is not dead, attempt to kill her and fail a few times until she finally gets the poison apple to her which will put her in a deep sleep that she won't awaken from until she receives true love's kiss. This doesn't really have to come from a prince. It could be anyone as long as it's someone who loves her and to whom she returns the feeling.]
Current area of residence: Living in a cottage out in the forest
Sample journal entry:
Dear Dairy,
I guess I won't be going to the festival this year after all. The hunter who Uncle sent me with out into the woods to pick flowers said that he was supposed to kill me! I don't know why Aunt would want to do something like that! It's scary to think about. I must have done something terrible for her to hate me so much, but I don't know what it could be! I wish there was something I could do to make up for it! I wonder if I should have let Mr. Huntsman kill me, but that would make mom sad and Mr. Huntsman didn't want to, so I don't know what to do.
Mr. Huntsman told me to run away, so I did. I hope he'll be okay even though he didn't kill me like Aunt told him to. Now I'm lost though and I don't have any idea where to go. I know mother would know what to do if she were in my place! She had to live in forests all the time back when she was young. If she could do it then so can I! I can't give up now! I have to keep going!
I'll have to find a place to stay and a way to get more food. I have some food for now, but that won't last too long. I don't know how to hunt, but maybe I can learn to fish? And I can find a cave to sleep in or climb up a tree at night so the wild animals won't eat me. But until then, I guess I'll just keep walking.
Roleplay sample:
This wasn't what she'd hoped for at all when she had gone out to pick flowers for tomorrow's festival. Since she'd left the huntsman, she had been walking all day with no idea where she was going or how far away she was from the nearest piece of civilization. She was tired and her feet hurt, not to mention she was starting to feel hungry, but she kept walking. This part of the forest was a bit dark and scary and she didn't think it was a good idea to stop here. Maybe if she found a river or a stream she'd stop.
She really wished she understood how she had ended up in this situation. Had she done something wrong? Something to upset the Queen? She must have done something terrible if the Queen wanted her dead, but she had no idea what it could be! Well, there wasn't anything she could do about it now, she would just have to hope the huntsman was alright and do her best to survive out here until she found civilization. She had to! Her mother would want her to do her best no matter how bad the situation was and she couldn't let her down.
After walking a while longer, she came across a large clearing in the middle of the woods. It seemed a bit brighter than any other part of the forest she'd seen so far so she ventured forward a bit to take a better look.
She was surprised to find a nice looking house in the center of the clearing. It looked really old, but well kept, at least on the outside. Who would be living out in the middle of this dark forest?
Curiosity brought her in closer, although she was a little wary. Her mother had told her stories about witches living in the woods away from everyone else like this. Some of them were nice and helpful, but there were plenty of mean ones too.
She cautiously came up to a window and peeked inside. It didn't looked like anyone was inside, but the place also looked like no one had cleaned in ages. Tohru could barely see the floor from where she was. She drew back, feeling a little bad for peering through someone's window even if it was to check for people. Well, there's might still be someone there. That had only been one room. The only sensible and polite thing to do would be to knock.
For a moment she paused as she wondered why she was planning to knock anyway. It might be safer to leave the house alone since she didn't know who lived there. It could be someone bad for all she knew, though a house that looked so bright on the outside made that seem unlikely even if it was a mess inside. Not to mention, she really didn't want to intrude or anything.
Then she quietly berated herself. She couldn't very well sleep out in the woods with wild animals and other dangers wandering around. That would be too dangerous. She could ask them for directions to the nearest village, and maybe, if she could find a way to repay them, they might let her stay for the night if the next village was too far away.
So, with this in mind, she took a deep breath and knocked on the door.
