“You’re hard to forget.”

Her eyes followed the man who had just spoken the words to her as he ran through the sand in front of her, followed by a not-entirely-sober Addison. She wasn’t entirely sure what had started the chase but it was amusing to watch either way.

Cooper was her friend. One of her best friends but just that. A friend.

Yet for the first time, standing in Addison’s house, the way he had looked at her as he’d spoken those words there had been something else there. Maybe it was something in his tone of voice, something in the way that he seemed unable to direct his gaze at her, finding the need for his eyes to be everywhere but on her, his speed at brushing away the comment as nothing. There had been something.

“You look deep in thought,” Pete sat down next to her in the sand.

“What do you think of Cooper?” she realised as she spoke exactly how stupid her question was, he was her friend, had been her friend for years. “I mean, not in the…never mind.”

“Cooper?” Pete looked at her in surprise before turning to look at the man who was now ringing out the bottom of his pant leg as he’d accidentally run into the ocean. “He’s a sex-crazed internet addict, that’s what I think of Cooper.”

“Yeah, yeah that‘s what I thought,” she sighed slightly.

Cooper wasn’t the type of person who looked for relationships, or even serious-dating. That wasn’t him, she was completely and utterly imagining things. No to mention that he was her friend.

The amount of times he had called her because he was left stranded somewhere because some internet hooker had abandoned him, or stolen his car, were too many to count. He just wasn’t the type of person she would ever date. She liked serious men, serious and mature. And not obsessed with internet hookers.

But then again, he was always there for her, he never lectured her about getting over Alan, he just made fun of her for it, always made her happy…

“Why?” Pete asked.

She almost jumped, completely lost in her thoughts. “What?”

Pete smiled as though he knew something she didn’t. “Why are you asking me about Cooper?”

“I was just wondering…you know…if he’ll ever find someone who isn’t an internet hooker,” it was entirely a lie.

“You know, you’re incredibly strange,” Pete lay down in the sand and Violet was glad the awkward conversation she had started was seemingly over. “But I mean if you’re looking to get laid, don’t go looking at Cooper, I’m right here.”

Or not.

She turned to him and glared. “I’m not looking.”

“Just saying,” Pete shrugged slightly and smiled at her from the ground.

Her attention was again drawn to Cooper when he shouted something loudly in Sam’s direction. She smiled slightly, he was her friend. That was all.

Yet as he walked over and fell into the sand next to her, turning onto his side and smiling at her, the light of the small bonfire reflected in his eyes she realised maybe, just maybe, she wasn’t entirely wrong about what she had sensed earlier.

“Smile, Violet,” he said, quietly. “Or I’ll have to drag you into the ocean…”

“And how is that supposed to cheer me up?” she asked, smiling anyway.

“It won’t, but it will be amusing for the rest of us,” he grinned evilly and she jumped up, suddenly aware that he wasn’t joking.

“No you don’t!” she almost-shrieked. “These…these are nice clothes.”

“They can be dry cleaned,” he replied, jumping up off the ground and grabbing her as she turned to run, scooping her up and starting towards the ocean.

“Cooper! Put me down.”

She hit him lightly on the shoulder but her heart wasn’t in it. He dropped her back to the ground no more than a foot from the water.

“So close, but you‘re smiling now, and as much as I would like to see you sitting out in the water glaring at me, I have a funny feeling I might regret it at work tomorrow,” his smile softened again in the way it had earlier and she felt a slight flutter she knew she shouldn’t be feeling.

She almost wanted to say something, to find out what he had meant earlier, but a bigger part of her didn’t want to know. As long as she was in love with Alan and no one else she was safe. Alan had hurt her and she couldn’t bring herself to be put in the position where it could happen again. Not with Cooper, not with her friend.

“Incoming!” Pete shouted as he ran for him, interrupting her thoughts again.

They both smiled as Cooper stepped aside, causing Pete to miss his target and find himself in the ocean.

“Shall we?” Violet said.

“Ladies first,” Cooper signalled towards the ocean and they both ran in after Pete.
