Summary: 'No one knew who they were here, out of uniform, half an hour drive from ADFA. They weren’t Commander Flynn and Lieutenant Commander McGregor (because she had kept track of their promotions). They were just Mike and Kate.'
It was years after she left Hammersley that she saw them again. It wasn’t that she hadn’t kept in contact, her and the X had the occasional phone conversation, but they weren’t that kind of friend. The kind that kept in contact regularly. Plus Nikki had been living in Sydney for the past two years and that made things difficult when it came to catching up.
But there they were, in Canberra, sitting at a coffee shop like any other couple.
For a moment she considered walking over to them, but then her curiosity got the better of her and she chose to just watch and observe. Maybe that made her a stalker, or maybe that was what made her a good friend. She would probably see them at the ceremony later anyway.
No one knew who they were here, out of uniform, half an hour drive from ADFA. They weren’t Commander Flynn and Lieutenant Commander McGregor (because she had kept track of their promotions).
They were just Mike and Kate.
And as she watched she saw Mike place a hand lightly on Kate’s as they laughed about something or other.
Thinking back she should have known. She’d thought about it a few times, but the X had always been so insistent that she didn’t have feelings for anyone on the boat. Nikki had known that was a lie but there wasn’t much she could’ve done - being the junior officer and all.
Sometimes she wished Kate had spoken to her about it. Nikki was possibly the only person on Hammersley who could have understood, and Kate definitely needed people to talk to.
She continued to watch silently as they had some sort of argument over something or other, Kate pulling her hand away from Mike’s and shaking her head. For a moment that made Nikki sad. She wanted them to be happy, wanted them to be together - because it was what she would never have - could never have - and for once she just wanted something to go right for someone.
Again she considered walking over to them, interrupting their argument - but as quickly as it started it seemed to finish. Mike called the waitress over and handed her his card and for a moment they just seemed to sit in silence, neither of them speaking.
That’s when she wonders why she’s never seen it before - the way they look at each other - the way they’ve clearly been in love from the moment Kate stepped onto the Hammersley.
And she hopes for their sake that things are going OK for them. Because she didn’t have what she wanted until it was too late - and all she can hope is that the same doesn’t happen to them.
