This is wonderfully done. I don't often buy Beckett/Esposito fics unless they're pre-series, because it's so clear how Beckett feels about Castle. But this is entirely plausible, the way that they use each other to avoid really diving into a relationship that scares them. I love the elevator scene with Esposito and Castle. You really capture the way that Castle tends to draw inward when he's hurt.

Thank you! Yeah I didn't even think of writing pre-season fic haha, I should do that. Next fic! ;-)

I'm glad you think Castle draws inward when he's hurt. That's always how I saw him. He becomes reserved, he doesn't do confrontation, except maybe with Beckett. And since this fic was from Esposito's pov I didn't think there should be any anger from Castle, because I don't think that's how he'd react.

I had a couple of reviews on ff.net that disagreed with Castle's reaction, but I really thought it was exactly how he would react.
