My SO serves on the committee for the regional union. He used to be president of his union at his job too, but resigned because he was getting sick of being bitched at from the company when he asked them for some benefits and bitched at from people who wanted more when the company couldn't provide it without laying people off (which actually happened...twenty-five people were laid off under the new guy).
On top of that, in Sweden, the unions have saved people from loosing their jobs whenever they go on maternity leave.
For reals. I've always been a union girl, since my grandpa would have found a way to come back from the dead to beat me, but in the last few years I've really come to understand just how fucked up it is to hate on unions.
