In-Character Information
Name: Goombario
Game/Series: Paper Mario
Canon Point: A few years after PM -- slightly AU due to character ages being so different (stuff like Mario and Parakarry being close to his age), but otherwise the same plotwise.
Age & Grade Level: Sophomore, 15

Personality: Goombario is confident, above all else. He feels he's capable of anything he puts his mind to, and often he's too stubborn to easily shake off if he decides he truly wants something. While this can lead to Goombario getting way in over his head, his determination is rarely shaken. Often, he is also perky. While this has faded as he's gotten older, he can be very cheerful, sometimes in a way that makes people forget he's in his mid-teens.

If he's not cheery, then he's likely being sarcastic. Dry humor is one thing he enjoys using, and someitmes he can be rather pessimistic with it. Usually this is a sign that he's annoyed by something, although the level of annoyance can range from "stubbed toe" to "homework just got set on fire by a Pokemon and the teacher won't believe him when he says that". Sometimes, Goombario just skips the sarcasm and goes straight into anger, although this takes extraordinary circumstances. He's pretty bad when it comes to holding grudges, however, and given that he tends to see the world in black and white, with very few shades of grey, he can become blind to the good sides of certain people.

Very, very rarely, Goombario will avoid all that and just become depressed. This has only happened a few times in his life, and the most recent involved his idol abandoning everyone again, his long-term crush turning out to be a fake person, and a...thing mind-screwing him and everyone else in the school. Basically, things a lot worse than what would get him mad. In those rare moments, Goombario withdraws from everything and everyone, usually just locking himself in his room until he's done feeling sorry for himself. If he has to interact with anyone at this time, though, he's pretty good at putting on a smile so that no one knows anything is wrong. Besides, it doesn't take very long for Goombario to cheer up again, and he'll be back on his feet and genuinely chipper before anyone realizes he was upset.

Backstory: Goombario was born in a tiny, newly-created village on the edge of a forest near Toad Town. Depsite, or perhap because of, Goomba Village being a quiet place, the child was drawn to the busy lifestyle of Toad Town. While there, he would often encounter all kinds of interesting places. A dojo that trained fighters, a shop or two that would sell trinkets for use in battle, and best of all, a place where he could read all the books he wanted. It wasn't exactly a library, but Russ T. didn't mind the little Goomba boy that often stopped by his home to look at his vast book collection and ask about little-known trivia in the world. Goombario's favorite stories were the ones about adventures. Historical or fantastical, fiction or nonfiction, he enjoyed the simple premise of someone setting out to right a wrong in the world.

In spite of the begging he did, his family wouldn't let him just leave home and see what was out there, mainly because they were realistic about things and knew a grade-schooler like him wouldn't last very long. Still, they supported his dreams to various degrees. The most supportive was his grandfather, Goompa. He had been a traveler back in his day, walking all over the Mushroom Kingdom and some parts of its neighboring countries just to see what was there, and even becoming the occasional subject whenever Russ T. or someone else talked about the kingdom's not-so-distant past. He himself had all kinds of stories to tell Goombario, who soaked up all the information like a sponge. His knowledge of the Mushroom Kingdom and the creatures within became extensive, but his desire to see the world himself just kept growing.

Inevitably, word of an up and rising star reached him. It all started with the kidnapping of the young Princess Peach (which upset Goombario greatly -- he had seen her once or twice when the royal family was making announcements, and he couldn't imagine why someone would do that to such a lovely girl), but then a young man named Mario had rescued her from the clutches of the evil Koopa King. Goombario began to follow news of the new hero closely as a cycle suddenly began, where Bowser would kidnap Peach and Mario would save her. Even though Goombario was too old to constantly fanboy over such things, he started to idolize Mario, and he became deadset on becoming a hero like that one day. He began to train as much as an armless, sapient shroom/chestnut could train, and often asked for advice and attention from passersby that would listen, much to their dismay.

One day, the usual cycle was shaken up when Bowser broke into Star Haven and took the Star Rod, giving himself all kinds of power. He proceeded to kidnap Peach's whole castle and, unknown to most people, beat the tar out of Mario and send him flying out a window. Had the Star Spirits not intervened, he would have likely died just a short way away from Goombario's house. As it was, though, his younger sister found the healed but unconscious man lying in a clearing.

Much panicking ensued.

It took Mario some time to return to full health, but he was soon awake and ready to leap into action to defeat Bowser. Goombario and his family were highly supportive of the plumber hero, and soon he was on his way, leaving his fan behind to send him off with cheerful goodbyes... At least, that's how it would have gone if Kammy hadn't shown up and blocked off the exit. After a small detour in which Mario got a hammer and beat up a little kid who beat up an old Goomba, he found the equipment necessary to reopen the way out. However, Goompa had watched him in battle, and realized then that this was the only chance Goombario would get at living his dream. He told his grandson to go follow Mario on his quest and help him out whenever possible.

Much fanboygasming ensued.

And so, Goombario became the first of a group of people who would join Mario on this journey. He got to see the kingdom and its many places -- the dusty deserts, the lush rainforests, the inside of a toy box, the inside of a sewer system. He'd complain at times, sure, and there were some times where it seemed he or one of his teammates was about to die, but at no point did he seriously consider turning back. The group of nine would rescue all the Star Spirits and storm Bowser's castle. Even though Bowser enhanced his strength with the Star Rod, Mario and his party had the blessings of the Star Spirits, Peach, and the entire kingdom on their side. Soon, the Koopa King was defeated, and the castle, along with the hostages inside, was safely returned to its rightful place.

When the celebrations ended, Goombario found himself dealing with attention from well-wishers who knew he had played a role in the rescue. It wasn't overwhelming, though, and it opened up new opportunities to train; for one thing, he would visit the dojo once in a while to practice, now that he had proved himself worthy of facing off against the regulars there. Still, he was becoming increasingly bored with schoolwork. It wasn't like he hated reading and exercising what he knew, but he didn't feel like he was learning anything relevant. When looking for a high school one year, though, he heard of a distant city that offered a high school that covered both brains and brawn. After much begging, his parents finally agreed to send him off to Smash Academy, aka Sumabura.

He spent a little over a year here, going through many trials. There, he gained the ability to become a human, and he found it easy enough to adjust to such a different place, even though he learned that the school was almost always upside-down because of some chaotic event. He learned to pilot a giant robot frog and do some dances to fight off evil. He fought against his own copy, a transformed and brainwashed Duplighost. He became one of the defenders of the city and perhaps the world when Aparoids invaded.

Word got around fast about the latter and about how a school stopped an invasion that could have overtaken the planet. This reached the ears of the Master of the Toad Town dojo, and he remembered the plucky boy who spent his childhood listening to the stories of past adventurers and his adolescence training in his dojo. He was planning another trip across the world to seek new opponents to test himself against, and this time he was bringing followers with him. He asked Goombario if he wanted to join him. At first, he was conflicted about leaving the school he had grown to love, and the fact that his family was now arguing over whether his education or his abilities were more important didn't help. After a few days of thinking, he decided he should always snap up once-in-a-lifetime chances like this. It had worked with Mario. Without consulting his family beforehand and with tearful goodbyes to his friends (although he hid the tears well), he left to go join The Master.

Goombario...didn't exactly know what to expect. Most of their time was not spent actively training, but traveling. Sometimes, when they settled down in a town, they'd spend time maintaining the building they were in, even if it was a hotel. Goombario always seemed to be stuck with going out and buying supplies for everyone, alongside general chorework. He complained about the "fetch quests" quite a bit at first, but The Master was having none of that, and often verbally bitch-slapped him for mouthing off. At one point, he seemed so fed up that he insisted Goombario go back home if he couldn't man up and learn some discipline. Goombario chose to stick around, and eventually he got used to it. He understood that it was meant to balance his training out, and that menial labor did improve motivation and work ethic. Even if he hated it, he couldn't deny that it was helping him bit by bit. Besides, as time went on, The Master allowed him to do more and more active training, in which he learned a few fighting techniques that worked out for him.

The year came and went, and soon The Master's entourage had ended up where it started, and they all parted ways. For Goombario, this meant either going home to his family to face their wrath -- the only contact he had had with them after leaving was letters -- or returning to a school he had technically dropped out of and was well-known for the antics it was always involved in.

He decided the school seemed safer.

Anything Else?:
-Held back a year thanks to ditching school during sophomore year.
-Has learned to kickbox in his time away, and while he's not a total pro, it means he's not a total pushover. even though you can still run circles around him because he has no ranged attacks but shh
-Full name is Goombario Kurio Kuribo. He hates it like burning, and for this reason he won't tell even close friends this. It's on his school records and such, though. And possibly on his teachers' rosters.
-His Skulltula pet has been given away to a family that was better suited to taking care of those things.
-Crushes on maybe 40% of the girls he knows. He is fully aware they don't mean anything, although he'll still swoon over them at times.
-His Final Smash, established in-RP a long time ago, involves him sprouting wings and a spike. He dubs it Spiky Paragoomba.
-His knowledge is limited, so no, he probably won't be able to accurately Tattle a total stranger/new area unless he was given prior info. Should have invested in an omniscient book, Goomby.

In-Character 1st person writing sample (journal): I'm baaack~.

Didja think I'd be gone forever? I can't stay away from all the classes! That and I don't really want to go home right now. So, I see new faces, and lots of them. I'm Goombario, by the way.

I've gotten better since I left, so I should be able to Not Fail at Fighting now. I mean, okay, Master's got issues when it comes to the task he commanded us to do sometimes, but in the end he was pretty cool. If nothing else, I learned to chop down trees. That's totally an Important, Essential Skill.

In-Character 3rd person writing post: Goombario wandered through the hallways, memories of the school coming back to him. It seemed alien to be back here after ditching for so long, but at the same time he knew exactly where to go for most things.

He figured that he had to reenroll, and he didn't even have to ask what was to be done. He had missed most of last year, and there was no way he could have moved on to junior year because of that. He had always thought himself as someone more likely to skip grades, but here he was, being held back a year.

There was a lot of catching up to do -- old friends leaving, new people entering. Had to pick more classes, had to figure what to do in life. One thing was certain, though:

His mother was going to kill him as soon as she heard he had returned to the school after dropping out without telling her.
