They're not very accurate snobs, unfortunately. They're thinking of Norwegian black metal. There aren't many notable Norwegian death metal bands.

Jack Osbourne was blasting Meshuggah at his neighbors, which is a Swedish band, even though he referred to it as 'Norwegian death metal'. They incorporate aspects of death metal but are very far from being black metal. I'm guessing this episode of The Osbournes was where they did the bulk of their research.

Almost certainly, they would have mentioned the sensationalistic church burning and murders in the black metal scene if they had heard of it.

D'oh! See, instead of me wasting money on these hacks' book, I should be encouraging you to write one of your own. Something like, "The A to Z of Metal" would kick ass!
