Wow what an amazing episode. They actually had sam being smart and recording the excorism. Interesting background with Henry and Josie and Abbadon. Josie did love Henry but he didn't feel the same way. I really look to Adam Glass now for a decent episode (since Ben Edlund left, that is). I think he's one of the smartest writers left on the team, and he writes Sam and Dean smart er than some of the others do. And I believe his heart's still in the original show. I loved Misha's directorial style, too. Very classy and moody and suggestive. I loved the return to the noir lighting of earlier seasons. Like you, I wasn't fond of the way the souls were depicted, though. Less like the powerful nukes of S6 and more like the stolen voices in the Buffy episode "Hush". Have you seen any of the reviews that reckon Dean drunk a bottle of whiskey without getting drunk? That's not the way I read that scene. Even before we saw the bottle I said "he's drunk" and "it would take a lot to get Dean drunk, the amount he's used to putting away" and then we were shown the empty bottle and I was like "right". I felt Jensen was doing a subtle performance of someone who was pretty drunk but doing a pretty good job of hiding it, but I was pretty sure Sam knew ( ... )

No I haven't seen any of the reviews about dean drinking and not being drunk. Yeah I thought it was more subtle and when he talked with sam it sounded like he was drunk a little bit but trying to hide it from sam.

I saw speculation this morning that Sam is Dean's Colette. People have kept pointing out that Sam's vulnerable to demonic possession since he lost the tattoo, and I was inclined to think it was just symbolic of the rift in Sam in Dean's relationship - but I think the Sam = Colette parallel has some legs.
