why so serious?

There are a couple things I've noticed lately in the world of fanfiction that sort of irk me.

In general: When people begin their fics with something like "I suck at writing." Personally, I'm a little hesitant to read things by people who begin with "This is my first time writing such and such" and extremely nervous at "first fics" and people who ( Read more... )

I'm the exact same way, actually. Like you said, when people say their writing sucks, it doesn't make me want to read it more. Instead, it makes me wonder whether I should read it or not period. I understand a writer not being entirely happy with their work--the most harsh critic being the writer themselves, etc. But saying you think your own writing sucks is like shooting yourself down before even giving anything a chance, not to mention it kind of looks like a plea for compliments. "Oh, my writing is so terrible, please reassure me and tell me I'm wrong!" Not that all people do that, but that's how it comes across to me sometimes... whoa. I'm sorry about going off on my own rant there. >.>

And I've never seen/read Hetalia before, but wow. That seems so complicated, lol. Fandom just can't be pleased sometimes, can they? xD;

Oh no, I know exactly what you mean. That's how it comes across to me most of the time as well.

No kidding. But, you know, to me when people give me feedback like that, I know I'm writing to people who are capable of thinking beyond the writing, and that means a lot. I've seen review pages for plenty of badfic, and it's amazing how low some people set their standards for "good fanfiction." So if people have time to complain about something, that means they're capable of thought.

If that made any sense. (0.0`)

Oh I generally won't even touch fics labeled like that. I mean, it's one thing if you're lamenting in your own personal journal all "omg I can't believe I wrote this, I suck!" but when you post it to the main community like that- it almost seems like you're attention whoring. I understand (being as I write myself) that generally writers have crap self esteem but jeez.

You know, it actually annoys me when writers DON'T use Su-san? I think it's because unless you completely re-culture all their terms (like you said, having them call Hanatamago FlowerEgg) it's just as jarring. Then again, I'm pretty big on everything being as much like the source material as possible. If you aren't writing them like the creator is, then you're just writing about two random personified countries and not Hetalia characters.
