So, the two weeks of camp are done (thankfully!), and I'm still alive and hopeful, which I'm grateful for. The second week was very tough, but like every other year, I came home more determined than ever to help these kids have better lives. It helps me get motivated for the final paper I have to write, and reminds me of why I'm putting myself ( Read more... )

I'm glad camp was a success. And I understand your sentiment about life getting back to normal and having chances to do things...like your painting.

What was your last thought in reference to? I'm thinking it was either the success of your kids in camp. Or that you were referring to you -- people putting you into a box as a child and you proving them dead wrong.

The last thought was in reference to two of the kids--we climb the sand dunes at the end of camp each year (it really is a tough climb) and there are always kids who struggle, esp. because of their weight a lot of times, and this year there were two kids that everyone (adults) were saying from the beginning of the week wouldn't make it up the dunes, and both boys went all the way to the top, without so much as a single complaint. One did it for his mom, the other did it to prove something to himself. He fell down once, got up, and said "I'm gonna climb all the way" and he absolutely did it. He just blew us all away with the strength he summoned from within himself.

I swear, you do something like this camp, and your life is never the same after that--it's like a heavy drug that makes everything else pale in comparison....

:) Bet you're sorry you asked now! ;)

Naw, grrrlll, I'm not sorry I asked. That ws totally touching. You know me...Ms. Emotional. I think that is awesome. I love hearing stories about the human spirit. And if kids can access it (spirit) at a young age...all the better. The alternative is them going through a long road of trying to figure out *how to deal* and gaining confidence after said struggle. If they can get it now...then heck yes on that!
