She runs in a clockwork maze.
It’s almost literal, too, with how time seems to rule her every breath. Breathe in, breathe out - one second closer to hibernation, one second closer to losing, to winning, whatever the hell it is this time.
Sometimes, she wonders how long the maze is. Everyone else thinks in miles and kilometers, but she thinks about the long run. She thinks, ‘How many more thirty-year breaks and temporary amnesias before I find my way out?’
When she manages to kill a chiropteran without bleeding all over the place, she thinks that she’s one step closer to finding the exit. When Diva slams Haji into a wall while she struggles to get up (get up, why won’t you stand), she thinks that something tricked her into running into a dead end.
The part of her that knows how to run and fight and chase says that the exit’s probably death. She tells herself that if that’s true, then she might as well kill Diva, too.
That is, of course, if she can keep up. Everything is faster, faster, faster when it comes to Diva. It would be fine if she was the hour hand, just leading her along until the time stops and they’re both left dead, but the minutes always leave her struggling to catch her breath. They always leave her trying to run harder.
‘The thing is,’ she thinks, ‘is that I don’t know if I can.’
But she’s still stuck in the maze, and she wants out.
