Bah.  So much for free filing of state taxes in Virginia.  The state just passed a law so that online tax filing will be handled by private businesses ( Read more... )

According to the bill's sponsor, it wasn't a core service of government.

The sponsor was a republican, but I don't know how the voting for it went, party-wise.

CT dropped their Telephone Filing service this year, but started online filing. Which I think is a good call. E-Filed federal and state for the first time.

Charging for less for paper. There's good ecology. :P

Sounds like some powerful lobbying by private companies like H&R Block who make a profit by doing electronic filings for people.

That said, I have consistently refused to use any electronic filing method. I am completely unsatisfied with the lack of an audit trail. If they claim you never filed, what do you have to show otherwise? I still file on paper, and pay by check if I owe money. The supposed "security" of online transactions is highly questionable to my way of thinking.
