House Remodel in Progress

Sorry for the month-long delay. The house remodel went from the planning stage to reality very quickly and I've been busier than a one-armed paperhanger frantically preparing for it. Activities to date in a nutshell ( Read more... )

Aren't we having fun? Keep your eye on the horizon and photograph everything that's been exposed, and not just so you'll have before and after pictures to show your nieces and nephews. And us. :) I think we all figured you'd be too harried to be very creative for a couple of months.

All I've done is deconstruct the composter and withdraw two wheelbarrow loads of compost for the garden. It was full of tiny pillbugs, earthworms and little centipedes, all of whom had been munching on the organics. Now reassembled and receiving green stuff for a new batch, in about five years, I think.

Yep, taking lots of photos, both for family history and in case we need to remember what was done, how, and when. Still a few drips from the now-exposed piping, but no gushers, so I think I'm OK till the pros show up next week.

Ooo, organic compost is so excellent!! Good on you for doing that. Have you seen the roller-barrel type ones? They are supposed to turn out compost much faster, and I'm tempted to get one once things settle down here. All those earthworms are a very good sign, that compost should be really rich.

How's the feline crewing reacting to all this business? Three of our cats would hide at the first sign of a stranger or unexpected noises; Blitz would immediately show up to watch (and accept attention ( ... )

It is hard to argue with free compost bins. :) Your potatoes and strawberries ought to be really happy, if the weather cooperates. I used to maintain a compost pile, I hope once all the various projects are done I can get back into it again.

The cats tend to take cover during the noisy parts of the remodeling process, then emerge once the work day is over. Then they try and inspect anything that has changed. They can smell and see the outside through the exterior wall that has been exposed. They would *really* like to go out and get a closer look, but no way. The outdoor kitties get to inspect the work personally and they do, as soon as the work crew leaves.

This is one of those projects where if you knew all the "excitement" waiting in store for you, you'd never do it. 0_o But it IS necessary, and very worthwhile. Mom will be moving in with me once it is done and that will be a good thing too. Combining households in this era of expensive energy makes a lot of sense, and it will give both of us more of a feeling of security, too.
