Free health food, anyone?

I'm on this sort of low-level health kick right now (no doubt partially due to reading Omnivore's Dilemma), and today I found a page on kashi.com - the healthy snack food company's site- where you can have a free snack sent to you! I've never eaten anything from this company, but I liked that you pick the snack you'd like to give up from a list, ( Read more... )

Hm, I may have to check that out.

I'm doing the same thing; trying to pay attention, buy things with as few ingredients as possible/only ingredients I can pronounce easily. My whole issue is sugary baked goods, though, so sometimes this can get problematic.

Yeah, it's kind of a bitch. It's amazing what is in some of the most basic things! The worst was discovering that tonic water is sweetened with high fructose corn syrup... My G&Ts make summer bearable! But I have a lead on some made with real sugar, if it ever comes back into stock. I'm hoping that the health trend away from that crap will make it easier to find the good stuff.

Oh man, now that is painful. What's life without good G&Ts? I choose not to look at the ingredients of my Blue Moon, it might scare me (since Fish isn't bottling my hefeweizen yet, damn them). What brand is this real-sugar tonic water you speak of?

Right now I'm hoping for a Trader Joe's to open in Lacey, like I keep hearing rumors is going to happen. That's going to make eating well SO much simpler. And cheaper, too.

The tonic is Fever Tree, which I think is UK-based. The only place I have seen it is Beverages and More, in CA, which fortunately has a web store. It was finally in stock today, so I just ordered some to try! I will report back.

TJ's is indeed a life-saver for easy, reasonably healthy stuff... I don't go there as often as I should, it would save me time and money that gets spent on eating out!

One of the ways I've been tackling the money versus organic was to take a loot at what goes in/comes out of the organics. Organic tomatoes, good investment. Organic bananas.... mostly taste the same, but cost 4x as much. Usually the stuff with thick skins don't get much benefit from organic growing.

I've also been tackling the whole issue of healthy food by avoiding stuff that is processed - not things like chocolate which need to be cooked, but things like processed cheese, frozen dinners, etc. That's where I've been getting all of my salt and nasty additives. I figure if I can cut those out, then a few random chemicals from the bits of stuff I do eat won't leave me pickled ^__^
