I haven't read the comic, but... ugh, I do not like the look of that trailer. Spartans fought as heavily armored phalanxes, they did not prance around in underwear, sword-fighting Persians one on one. They only used the xiphos after they had broken their spears. And a month and a half to practice fighting? Try a lifetime, Mr. director. These guys were so well coordinated, they practically danced into battle. Just the sound of their charges was enough to make green troops run.
The comic is a different beast, and in the comic they are portrayed as close to nude. This being an adaptation of that... The story is good, and in terms of war stories, gets its message across.
I do think the movie looks laughable. Less phalanx, more Troy.
Obviously, giving them a lifetime is a little undoable.
oh dear, i was hoping that all of the oddness could be attributed to the comicbookadaptation thing and that the movie would be wonderful. the part where they talk about mixing different martial arts styles got me a little worried, but at 6 am i had faith. now, it all seems a little more grim.
Maybe it was simply because the only thing they talked about was the fight scenes, but they made them seem much more important then the comic book did.
The comic was focused much more on discussion between Xerxes and Leonidas and unabashed admiration of the Spartan soldier culture then the actual fighting. When fighting occured, it was "Well, now the Spartans stomp all over everyone, ho hum."
My money is on it being another summer action movie, with a little laconic badassery.
no, but clearly i should. and yes, truthiness is a good thing, but i suppose as long as it's 'fun to watch' and 'exciting' youuuu won't care if it's accurate (/snooty voice)
