Grr. Argh.

OK, it sucks to be the only person I know into my favorite show. It sucks even more that, with all the shows I like, I'm the only one into them. Mainly because I don't have anyone to talk to them about.

In this case, Doctor Who. almariel and swingchick, you are my dearly beloved exceptions, but still. I come to the end of my Saturday evening indulgence, I'm ( Read more... )

ahhh, the joys of fandom-on-LJ. plasticity April 29 2007, 07:06:53 UTC
I... feel suddenly quite abashed. because I am overly critical of my Shows, for the reasons you pointed out: they hit a peak, lodge in my head as this perfect Thing, and then, they move on, and I often don't, and throw a hissyfit, which is admittedly ridiculous when I step back. (you were witness to one just a month or so ago, with BSG.)

so, I've been trying a different tack with this season of Doctor Who than I did the last one (where I grumbled far too much about all manner of things, to myself, as no one I knew was watching it): yeah, it's often ridiculous, and silly (cat nuns?! a giant face dies and we sniff sadly? and, um, Dalek Sec of tonight's ep, with his wiggly phallic face extensions? ew. and don't let's start on the dna-electrical-solar-flare-time-lord-transferrance "science", we'd be here all night). If I were to be as critical of it as I was of BSG I'd have to turn the TV off in a huff far too often. so, I've changed my expectations a bit, and am in it for the fun, for the fact that the show is one of the few good ( ... )

I don't think you CAN be a fan of doctor who if you don't embrace the cheese. It'd be like enjoying Buffy, except for all those vampires.

(Personally, I view it as an adventure show with sci fi elements. It helps)

Also, what I dislike the most about the fandoms, which I probably didn't accentuate enough in the original post, is the proprietary attitude they have toward the shows; the idea that the show is made FOR them, and they're owed something or other from it. It's not so much that any of the specific complaints are wrong, though the sonic screwdriver one was particularly hilarious.

Meh. I can't warm up to Martha. I want to like her, but I'm just not feeling the love. And frankly, I think the writers aren't either, they way they have the Doctor pining for Rose...

That said, I totally called the Time Lord DNA getting into the mutant human/daelek thingies, but I thought maybe that's what the Face of Bo meant when he told El Doctore he wasn't alone.

Meh.

Plus, where the hell is Jack?

HEY!

I have met Colin Baker and the guy who played Adrick.

So when you want to talk Dr. Who I can be that person.

Whoa that's awesome...and means almost nothing to me, as I haven't started on the old ones yet. I'm a crummy fan. (hangs head)
