iron & wine - the trapeze swinger
i first heard this song at a mediocre iron & wine show at neumos about a year prior to its release and didn't really like it. maybe because it seemed weird for a pop song to not have a chorus.
sam beam mentioned he'd written it for a movie called synergy. the movie was eventually re-named in good company and, let's be honest, it was not a particularly good movie.
but i remember watching it by myself on one of those miraculous seattle summer nights where the entire city exhales and the day's heat finally gives way. i could hear my housemates opening a bottle of wine and laughing upstairs. but down in my tiny basement bedroom, i watched the credits roll as this song played underneath. and i believed with my whole heart, against all reasonable expectations, that something good was about to happen to me, too. i believed in everything that happened next.
sort of an inconsequential thing, i know. but even so, it's a story i've never told anyone before.
