here is the catch this year

When is the Mavericks Festival?
The Festival happens at the same time as the contest on January 20, beginning at 8 am.

Does my ticket allow access to the beach and bluffs?
No. The giant waves of Mavericks generate surges that leave the small beach at Mavericks underwater, with no beach to stand on. The nearby bluffs are environmentally sensitive areas that cannot handle the crowds of thousands of people. For public safety, local authorities from San Mateo County Sheriff, California Parks, CHP, San Mateo County Harbor District and other participating agencies will close off all roads to Pillar Point, including access to the beach and bluffs. By purchasing your ticket, you are agreeing and consenting to the rules of the event and that you will not go to the beach or bluffs at Pillar Point.

this is the first year that the festival will take place without letting people anywhere close to watch it live, unless you paid lots of money for gold passes, or something like that. check the web site for all the
