Be glad that your sump pump is running! I recall my parents turning it off and forgetting it was off until we got hammered with rain. Yeah, I remember standing water in the basement on more than one occasion.

Unfortunately I think this sort of thing is inevitable with homeownership

Yeah, pretty sure stuff like this is written in the contract somewhere... :P

Honestly, I was silly enough to think the sump might not actually be necessary, seeing as I've been here over a year now and it's never had to do any work. I'm *really* glad the home inspector knew how to test it and make sure it was in working order before I bought the house, now!

Yarg to flooded basements! How much water did you end up with? ;.;

it happened on several different occasions; usually it would just collect in the corners, since those tended to sink a tad lower. It would spread out over a hundred square feet or so, maybe less, usually not more then a centimeter deep.

Yeah, the one spot that leaked in my house was in a corner - granted, it was probably because of the half-inch wide crack in the floor more than anything else... >_>

Eww, even just a centimeter's gotta be a pain, especially if it's across the whole basement. No fun, no fun at all :(
