09. Who is the most annoying person on the planet?

Feb 14, 2007 22:54

Ryan Chappelle. God rest his soul.

I suppose I have to qualify this by saying I really knew very little about Chappelle, the man. I didn't know about his ex-wife or kids. I didn't want to, because all I knew was Ryan Chappelle, the bureaucrat, and I often wanted to shoot him in the face.

He might have made a great lawyer, but Chappelle made a lousy CIA agent. He simply didn't understand anything that wasn't directly in front of his face. To give you an idea of how annoying and self-serving he was, he once denied the exchange of myself for Alexis Drazen, knowing that would basically destroy our chance to take down Victor Drazen and save the life of then-Senator David Palmer. George Mason went directly against his orders to pursue the exchange, and Mason has never done me any favors. When even Mason thinks you're an idiot, you're a really big idiot. Chappelle was often an idiot when it came to issues that didn't involve politics.

There are other people who annoyed me. Tony Almeida annoyed me when he got together with Nina, and began treating me like everything I did to him was because she was with him and not me. Of course, now Tony is one of my best friends. Jake Hannigan was a pain in my ass when Chappelle assigned him to me, and I was glad to see the back of him. However, unlike the man who put him in my unit, Hannigan could be counted on to shut up and do the right thing when it really counted. Chappelle always seemed to put himself and his ambitions before those of anyone else, including innocent lives. I always thought he got into public service because he thought it might look good. That was the only explanation I could ever fathom.

This was before, of course, he was shot dead in his office five years ago, murdered by Nina Myers. There's another relationship where there was no love lost. She had killed him because he was too close to finding out that she was at large. In that sense, whatever legwork that Ryan was doing would have been a complete bombshell, and it did end up saving hundreds if not thousands of lives. Whatever he did, he must have been doing something right, and what happened after that owes its success to Ryan Chappelle. I'm not going to hold back credit where it is due, and recapturing Nina was possible because he found her first.

But I'm also not going to stop from saying that ninety percent of the time when I looked him in the eye, he was a weasel.
