Sometimes it takes a lifetime to look for your soulmate. Sometimes it only takes a second to change everything.

They met at a senior prom. One was a student; the other, an acquaintance of a friend. It didn’t take long until the two looked at nothing but each other. It was mutual; it was attraction; but they were certain it wasn’t love yet. They didn’t know each other and yet nobody made a move to talk to each other. That was until their friend took the initiative and introduced one to another. The student was called Yunho; the friend was called Jaejoong.

It was until at the end of the party that they started to exchange a few words. It was too little and short for them to even exchange phone numbers. So they just waved goodbye and parted ways.

(Little did they know, that the two of them asked their friend to have the other’s number the day after.)

It wasn’t enough. Even being able to contact the other was never enough; they still didn’t dare to bother the other until days turned into weeks. Weeks turned into a month. One thought he had already been forgotten; the other presumed that since they didn’t know each other why would they talk to each other again?

It was when they started to forget about the other that they met again. They had wished to bump into each other before. So much. Yet, it didn’t happen. Fate according to one; coincidence to the other. Their eyes met; their hearts beat wildly. They shared awkward smiles, exchanged few words until Yunho asked for the other’s number.

(Both of them didn’t forget to add a little heart after the other’s name.)

Still having butterflies in their tummy, they waved goodbye. They promised each other to hang out some other time. And as impatient as Jaejoong was he couldn’t help himself but send a message until he reached his house -twenty minutes later. He wasn’t expecting the other man to reply to him a few seconds later, telling him to meet at the end of the week; he absolutely didn’t mind. It was only Tuesday; it was torture.

For some reason, though, they didn’t talk that much through messages. One didn’t want to cling too much onto him, the other didn’t know if he’d reply to him. One, two, three texts per day, that was all. Not until one of them finally stopped their slow routine. ‘Do my messages really bother you, or do you have no credit left?’ The other man replied immediately. ‘I didn’t want to annoy you with my messages actually. I’m sorry. I always have credit by the way.’

(And it led them to hours of conversations by texts until they had to sleep.)

They both waited the weekend to come; they both anticipated that Saturday afternoon; they both longed for their meeting. They were supposed to meet around three, however one of them turned out to be thirty minutes before. The other only came five minutes after. They just happened to be near the block by chance -as if.

The two males finally left each other after three hours of hanging together. They smiled once again, waved good-bye and parted ways. And it hurt somehow, as if they were already used to each other. A few minutes later, they were exchanging other messages though, already talking about the next meeting. Two days after.

(They didn’t want to look pretty addicted yet; otherwise they would meet the day after.)

They didn’t mind their little routine every time they met. They would glance at the other; they would smile at each other; they would shake hands. Until one of them decided to hug the other man; until he couldn’t help it; until he realised it wasn’t lust anymore. Yunho blushed; apologized before murmuring he liked Jaejoong.

He didn’t expect him to grab his hand; he didn’t expect him to interlock their fingers; he didn’t expect to be kissed. They blushed like crazy, enjoying their first kiss as if they were teens again.

(Time passed and they didn’t still let go the other’s hand.)

There’s a first time for everything.

First date. They ended up in an amusement park. As long as they were together, they didn’t mind. First dinner. They ate in a fancy restaurant. Just because one of them wanted to impress the other. First sunset, first walk hand in hand and first fight. And then there’s the first night together and the first time Yunho finally confessed.

They were together for two months, and if Jaejoong didn’t reply to him, Yunho didn’t mind -yet. He knew it was mutual, and that was all that mattered.

(The more they spend their time together, the better.)

Since he was with his other half, Jaejoong liked morning’s the most. He liked him to be the first thing he would see when he wakes up; he liked to stare at him, preventing himself from stroking his cheek; he liked laying here with him. Then, Yunho would open his eyes, smile at him, grab his hand and interlace their fingers together.

They would melt in their bubble, murmuring sweet words; they would glance at the other lovingly; they would share kisses.

(And Jaejoong agreed. There was nothing better than morning kisses.)

Four months. Four months they got together. Yunho had never fallen so deep before but he didn’t mind. He always told him he loved him; he couldn’t help it. The other never replied, he always earned a smile but he didn’t complain. He could feel his love by the way he looked at him, the way he took his hand, the way he kissed him, the way he held him.

He knew Jaejoong loved him; he just knew. Though, he’d like to hear it. And days turned into weeks. Weeks turned into months. Five months. Six months and yet nothing.

(Yunho really didn’t ask much. Only three words were enough.)

He hoped, imagining the day he would hear the words. He waited, believing in their feelings. He doubted, wondering if it was still mutual. He got tired, finally giving up.

Yunho knew he couldn’t let go of Jaejoong; he just loved him this much. But he loved him enough to let him go; he didn’t want to keep him prisoner forever. ‘Good things never last’ they say and he finally decided to do something. And the day after Valentine ’s Day, he would end their relationship; he would set Jaejoong free.

As much as it hurt him, he didn’t mind; as long as the other was happy, he didn’t mind.

(Jaejoong was the one for him; maybe he wasn’t the one for Jaejoong.)

Yunho had changed, Jaejoong noticed it. He felt his boyfriend distant: awkward hugs, little smiles, less kisses. He felt Yunho uncomfortable with him. He was afraid that he had fallen out of love. He couldn’t bear imagining this.

But then, drastic changes occurred: lovey-dovey attitude, loving gazes, skinship. A few days before Valentine’s Day. However, despise all of that, he would notice Yunho faking smiles whenever he told him he loved him. He wasn’t used to say those three words, he didn’t know why. Maybe he should learn how to express his feelings through words.

(Even if actions do speak louder than words, words had a bigger impact.)

The day finally came and Yunho felt his heart ache. He couldn’t help thinking about his decision all day. He went out for a while, wanting to distract himself; wanting to believe he could live without the other, which wasn’t true. He got back after two hours, it was almost dinner time. The place was empty; Jaejoong didn’t even bother to buy him something. He was on a verge of crying.

His eyes found a piece of paper and recognized the handwriting. He shivered, his heart pounded and he smiled. He didn’t need to read the word once again. ‘I heart you, just so you know.’ it said. The young man walked towards the bedroom where the other was laying on the bed. He lay down beside him, still smiling. ‘Jae’ he murmured.

“Shut up,” Jaejoong replied, trying to hide his smile.

He intertwined their fingers together before kissing Yunho slowly. And the latter realised.

(He knew he was the one for Jaejoong; he knew they were made for each other.)
