I would like a Peter Pettigrew for Mary here. Set in their sixth or seventh year at Hogwarts. I feel these two would be drawn to one another. Perhaps both are quiet and lonely. Mary was attacked by Mulciber in their fifth year and it did sort of change Mary. Now, shes more reserved, she stays in the shadows. Careful not to attract attention to herself from people like Mulciber. I think she could attract someone like Peter, because I do think she could understand what its like to be Peter Pettigrew.
I've pictured him as a polite, quiet guy. We know from the book that you know, he's just a loyal follower to James and Sirius. He looked up to them. I always imagined Peter starting to slip from the Marauders in his sixth and seventh year. He becomes interested in a different following. We all know what happens to him, he becomes sort of pathetic and lost. It could be fun to explore Peter Pettigrew's life and how he evolves away from James, Sirius, and Remus. If you ever thought about him that is. I can picture Peter hiding his new interest in Lord Voldemort from Mary. I see some angst there and drama.
There is no reason why he couldn't have had a love interest. I can picture he and Mary to the public being "opposite attracts" she was popular, and Lily Evans best friend. Inside though, there is a deeper girl who does relate and fit well with Peter.
I am open for anything, and I'd like to hear how you viewed Peter Pettigrew. I hope this happens, my muse would very much like her Peter.
